A surrogate is a woman who agrees to carry a child of another person or couple who will be the biological parents of a child after birth. Surrogate carry a child by a process of surrogacy which is a legal agreement made between the intended couple and a surrogate.
Every woman cannot become a surrogate. She must be of age over 18 and below 35. She can be single or married but must give birth to a healthy baby. She knows all the complexities and procedures of pregnancy.
A surrogate should be mentally and physically healthy. In surrogacy clinics, psychological counseling is provided to surrogates about the surrogacy procedure. A surrogate must be emotionally satisfied.
Role of a Surrogate in Surrogacy
Choice of the right surrogate is the biggest task because leihmutter plays an important role in the different types of surrogacy:
In Traditional Surrogacy
Traditional surrogacy is not common as gestational surrogacy but can be the best option for infertile couples. The traditional surrogate can be an egg donor for homosexual couples, single men, and mothers who cannot produce healthy eggs. In this surrogacy eggs of the surrogate mother are used to fertilize with the sperms of a donor or intended father.
Then egg/sperm fertilize artificially by a process called intrauterine insemination. A surrogate can be a biological mother of the child born and the biological father is the intended father or sperm donor.
Because by egg donation a surrogate shares her DNA. The Genetics of child match with the surrogate. In traditional surrogacy, the surrogate (leihmutter) carries the child of the intended father and gives it to the wife of the intended father after birth.
In Gestational Surrogacy
Gestational surrogate agrees to bear a child of heterosexual infertile couples, and woman who has healthy eggs but not carry her pregnancy safely. In gestational surrogacy, the surrogate made a legal agreement with the intended couple and decide all the expenses.
A surrogate agrees to bear the child of the intended couple. Egg/sperm of the intended couple is used and fertilize by IVF process and place the embryo in the ovary of the surrogate. But in some cases, the egg donor donates her egg that can be anonymous.
Then egg fertilizes with the intended father’s sperm and places the embryo in a surrogate she carries it till childbirth. A gestational surrogate cannot be the biological mother of a child born. She gave the baby after birth to the intended biological parents.
In Altruistic Surrogacy
In an altruistic surrogacy, a surrogate can be a relative, family member, or friend. An altruistic surrogate does not need any compensation.
